UPDATE ! 2010-10-10, thank you Monique :-)

We went to Zujiajian last weekend to find the idyllic beach you pictured on your blog. It’s still there! We stayed in the guesthouse which card you put on the blog for 2 nights. It’s extremely basic/not so clean for 100 RMB per room per night including great sea food dinner. We had brought our own breakfast. The beach is fantastic but one is not allowed to swim. The next beach has now been designated to be swam at at a fee of RMB 40 after you pay the national park entrance fee of 60 pp. We swam anyway and got out when the guards came to shoo us out and went back in when they left. There was a bunch of young guys with bikes riding on the beach not bothering anyone with a small tent and they too were told to leave. We got shoo’d of the beach at night too and they told us it wasn’t safe and escorted back to the guest house. During the day they told us it wasn’t safe to swim because there were sharks! The lady of the guest house confirmed there are none! It’s the park mafia that want you to go swim at the beach they are monitoring. There are clean new toilets right on the beach in three locations. We saw tents but they too were asked to leave. They always came after dark. We actually visited the park with our car and the scenery was beautiful. There are bridges all the way now from the mainland and no more ferries are needed to get there. They are not yet on Google Earth maps. Not even on our friend’s Iphone maps. The infrastructure the Chinese are putting in is absolutely incredible.
The lady of the guest house told us that she’s going to be bought out by the government who have offered her a villa and apartment in town in return for taking over the hamlet (that has some really cute original stone cottages in it which no doubt will be razed to the ground) to build a small hotel in the next two years.

6hrs bus ride from Shanghai (departure Saturday morning, come back on sunday afternoon) great beach opportunity on a sunny week-end.
Bus : 260rmb for return ticket
Camping : free. (BEWARE OF THE TIDES, WATER MIGHT REACH YOUR TENT WHILE YOU’RE SLEEPING!!! camp carefully, ask around)
food : 150 rmb/pers/day
+ taxi link : 50rmb

AND YOU CAN SWIM THERE. We did it.. no skin problems or anything afterwards. ENJOY!!

Below is the name card for public bus line to Zhoushan 舟山 (the name of the main island). This bus line is much much more confortable than  Shanghai South Station regular bus to Putuo. They’re like 4stars buses, realy!
They run from Shanghai Nan Pu Bridge Bus Station (上海南浦大桥长途汽车站)-> ZhouShan 舟山. (140 yuan)

BOOK THE RETURN TICKET at the same time.

THERE IS ALSO A BOAT LINE from there. Needs 5 hours also.

Whether you take this company or the Public buses, you will arrive directly in Shenjiamen, from there, take a cab and go to the 1000feet beach (50rmb max). In Shanghai Southern bus station, ask for a bus ticket to PUTUO (普陀), you will also reach Shenjiamen.. but the buses were crappy… i.e very little space for legs .. while the ones from the company…. WOW so big and comfy !!

The bus takes the ferry on the two ways, so no need to bother about it. You’ll have to step out of the bus for the crossing.

PHONE NUMBER TO BOOK FROM SHANGHAI : (021) 3376 5128. Saturday tickets start selling on thursdays. You have to go by yourself to NanPu Bridge station as they can’t send the tickets to your place. BOOK THE RETURN TICKET at the same time.

Below name card is the only one restaurant/hotel on the 1000feet beach. One night is around 150rmb I guess.
They have great food and cold beers. expect to pay 20rmb/dish

CAREFUL, always double check the prices.
AND CAREFUL : if you decide to stay near Nansha beach, prices are CRAZY ! Hotel rooms are 600rmb during weekend, restaurant have crazy prices as well : we paid 250rmb for lunch!!! You’d better eat in Shenjiamen first and then come to the beach. Or go directly to the 1000 feet beach where prices are normal (for how long??)

CAREFUL#3 : NANSHA beach has a 60rmb entrance fee. and it’s CROWDED (see picture in the slideshow).. and apparently no restaurant on the beach.. avoid it. Go directly to 1000feet beach (you can easily walk from Nansha entrance gate, it will take you 10minutes), or maybe Eastern Beach but I haven’t been there.
