« Trips Around Shanghai | Posted on 03/26/2009 05:23 pm by CeDWu Xie Scenic Spot is located in the northwest of Zhuji City, a county-level city under administration of Shaoxing City. It consists of 72 mounts, 25 cliffs, 10 rocks, 5 waterfalls, 3 valleys, 2 creeks, and 1 lake. The most famed tourist attractions are the five waterfalls. The local people in Zhuji call waterfalls Xie. The scenic sports have five waterfalls, so it is named Wu Xie (Five Waterfalls). The five waterfalls have been famous since 1400 years ago. Many men of letter from different dynasties visited the place and wrote poems or prose, or painted pictures for it. The five waterfalls connect end to end with each other. But they take on different appearance.
The first waterfall is lovely and gentle. At the bottom is a pond named Little Dragon Well. The pond is 5 meters deep. It remains a question about its origin. Some believe it man-made. Some believe it is formed by nature. A tale goes that long ago, a boy named Liu Longzi constantly angled in the pond. One day, when he was angling, there appeared two dragons, which fought fiercely for a pearl. All of a sudden, the pearl rolled to Liu Longzi and he picked up the pearl immediately. The two dragons stopped their mutual fight and turned to attac
k him. Liu Longzi was so terrified that he hastily swallowed the pearl. In a split second, he became a dragon and ascended to the sky. His mother hurried to the pond and was only able to catch his tail. She clung to the tail and was brought by his son into the sky. Afraid of dropping his mother, Liu Longzi frequently turned his head to check. It is said that he turned his head for 18 times and as a result the river bended for 18 times.
The second waterfall is closely connected with the first one. Its vertical throw is 7.1 meters. It is divided into two in the middle by a protruding rock. The third waterfall is the most magnificent. In rainstorm, it falls drastically, producing thunderous sound just like thousands of horses running in the battle field. The fourth one used to be the most adventurous for visitors had to climb up the cliffs to appreciate it. Now, there is assisting equipment. The fifth waterfall has a 31.2-meter vertical throw. In sunny days, you may come across rainbows. Summer is the best time to visit Wu Xie Scenic Spot.
Trip Introduction
We will depart from Shanghai South Railway station at 7:25 sharp. Only one fast train goes to Zhuji in the morning. We’ll arrive into Zhuji at 9:55, and our awaiting vehicle will take us straight to the Wu Xie Waterfall scenic zone. Without further delay, we’ll head straight for the ferry which takes us across a large water reservoir. After crossing the reservoir, we’ll embark on a 10 minute walk into the scenic zone. We’ll be ascending from the last waterfall all the way up to the first waterfall. At the top of the falls, there is a quaint little local restaurant where we can stop to have lunch. We’ll continue our ascend up the hill slope, and this part is quite a steep hike for at least 15 – 20 minutes. The torturous uphill comes to an end as you come to the ridge of the mountain. There is a nice pavilion there for resting and taking in the views. You will be relief to know that the path will be all downhill from this point on. We descend onto the bottom of the valley with a small creek running along side the path. There are some deep pools in the creek which would make ideal swimming holes for the summer. The walk at this point on is just nice and easy until we get back to the pier for our ferry back to the entrance of the park. Since we’ll still have plenty of time before our late afternoon train, we’ll take the public bus back to the train station. The entire park is densely forested, and I can imagine that the autumn colors should be quite stunning there.
